Horse races are an ancient, longstanding form of athletic competition in which horses are ridden and guided by jockeys. One of the world’s most widely practiced sports, they have long been part of various cultures’ folklore as well as Olympic competition. Modern fans also often bet on horse races as an entertaining pastime. Horse racing in the United States is a multi-billion dollar industry regulated by the federal government and enjoyed by people of all ages. Furthermore, this sport is also massively popular across Europe and Asia. While it may appear challenging to win a horse race, betting strategies used include placing bets on who will finish first through third place as well as using accumulator bets; other methods include parlays. Horse racing has long been the subject of much discussion. While some see its promotion as important, others view it as potentially harmful to animals. There have been multiple scandals surrounding animal cruelty claims within its industry; yet some believe if these issues are addressed then its future might still be bright. Horse racing in America had long been a profitable venture. Many sports cable packages included TVG channels for live racing coverage and they offered many people who weren’t doing much else an opportunity to watch races while learning lingo from watching live races. After the recent tragedy at Santa Anita Park, however, everything shifted. A video released showing trainers Steve Asmussen and Scott Blasi using whips on horses during an exercise known as stretch running was shocking evidence of cruelty and needless abuse. Horses were exhausted and in distress; their lower legs took an excruciating beating that stretched ligaments and tendons beyond tolerance. Trainers attempted to keep running them hard despite discomfort; activists highlighted how the horses weren’t happy about this training regimen, yet trainers seemed intent on pushing through regardless. Horse race fans and bettors understand the need for reform is immediate and must start by providing adequate funding and aftercare solutions for ex-racehorses, otherwise these horses could bleed into the slaughter pipeline where arbitrary ransom payments may be charged; Mexico or Canada where conditions for horses can be devastatingly poor are then transported as their fateful journey continues – only some managed rescue efforts exist where volunteers network, fundraise and work tirelessly in an attempt to save some. Unfortunately this cannot continue; this situation must change immediately!
