MGM Discoveries Art Prize and New Prizes at the Hong Kong Racing Club

Finalists in this competition receive more than just prize money: in addition to free masterclasses with internationally-renowned teachers, as well as educational and networking opportunities, including masterclasses from internationally-acclaimed instructors as well as opportunities to perform at Carnegie Hall! It is open to all Hong Kong residents; its jury includes Claire Hsu, co-founder and executive director of Asia Art Archive; Kacey Wong is an eminent artist judged.

At this year’s Art Basel Hong Kong, the inaugural MGM Discoveries Art Prize winners will be on display. One such winner is South Korean artist Shin Min, whose sculpture Ew! There’s Hair in My Food! explores the harsh realities that women must deal with when working in high-pressure service and corporate sectors. His installation will remain on view in Discoveries section until 30 March.

As well as cash prizes, winners of the MGM Discoveries Art Prize will also be presented with HK$50,000 worth of MGM vouchers, to be divided among multiple winners equally. Established by Hong Kong Cultural Centre with support from MGM and to encourage contemporary art in Hong Kong, this new initiative hopes to address an imbalance that often exists between financial and business industries and art scenes by awarding outstanding graduate works that demonstrate commitment towards artistic progress with potential impact and relevance.

MGM is also increasing prize money at its club for next season, increasing PP bonuses for Griffins by 8 percent and adding an extra HK$2 million prize fund for races at 1600m or longer distances – this means the BMW Hong Kong Derby and two legs of Four-Year-Old Classic Series races will each be worth an impressive HK$26 million each, up from their current totals of HK$20 million each.

Finally, the society is offering a new prize to recognize scholarly books in global Hong Kong studies: ICAS 2023 Book Prize for the Best Article on Global Hong Kong Studies will open to academicians, researchers, and other stakeholders who contribute to furthering this field. Winning articles will be featured in ICAS Book Series of Global Hong Kong Studies 2023 Edition.
