This award was established in 2006 to commemorate Professor George B. Endacott, an instructor from the Department of History who was instrumental in revitalizing it following World War II and helping establish Hong Kong history as an academic discipline. Friends and former students of Prof. Endacott raised a fund in 1996 in his memory in order to set up this prize in his honour.
This year’s Hong Kong Art Prize saw nine local artists make its shortlist; this marked a record number. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha won the Grand Prize with her sculpture made from red marble entitled, A Home Is Terrible Place to Love; she became one of only a few women ever to do so.
One of the winners was a photographer renowned for capturing the lives of migrants living in Hong Kong, her images having been used in campaigns and exhibitions as well as being included in two books written by her and receiving many awards and accolades; she is particularly known for her work with homeless communities in Hong Kong.
Apart from its main prizes, the festival also awards special awards to short film. Winners are selected by a panel of judges from among those working on main competitions; then go through another round of public voting before finally being shown during the closing ceremony on March 27.
