The Importance of Data Governance

Data is an indispensable resource, used across an organization for strategic decisions, operations management and compliance needs. Therefore, it’s crucial that everyone in the business have access to high-quality and trustworthy data sources.

Establishing internal data policies entails setting internal standards on how data should be collected, stored, disposed of; who has access to what type of data; and the types that are in use at any given time. Furthermore, compliance with external standards set by industry associations or government agencies are part of data governance as is taking steps to make sure it stays secure, private and available.

ARM Southern Great Plains (SGP) atmospheric observatory is one of six research facilities within Atmospheric Radiation Measurement’s (ARM) user facility network, comprised of in situ and remote sensing instrument clusters located across north central Oklahoma to gather high-quality observations of the atmosphere. SGP data are utilized for various applications ranging from single observation analyses to large-eddy simulation modeling and assimilation into Earth system models.

To calculate an mSGP score for teachers, the NJDOE uses district course roster data combined with relevant SGP scores to create teachers’ mSGP scores. Teachers may view their mSGP scores by visiting their teacher dashboard.

In addition to using SGP scores as part of an assessment’s mSGP scores, the New Jersey Department of Education also uses SGP data to calculate teacher evaluation ratings. To do this, the district verifies course roster submission data through NJ SMART during summers following each year’s state assessments, then uses this information along with SGP scores and teacher practice ratings to produce each teacher’s evaluation rating.

After using the Median Student Growth Percentile Conversion Chart to convert their scores, mSGP percentiles are then rounded down to their nearest whole number before being combined with teacher’s SGO scores and classroom evaluation ratings to produce final ratings for each teacher and class.

The SGP is a new metric designed to offer a more holistic, student-centric approach to school accountability. It takes into account both a student’s academic progress and behavioral outcomes as assessed through classroom or district assessments. Account is also taken of student socioeconomic status, special education services/interventions provided, as well as family background. This initiative of the Common Core State Standards aims to enhance student outcomes by giving educators a fuller picture of each child’s educational experience and is expected to become standard practice throughout all schools by 2022. Furthermore, SGP serves as an integral measure for measuring college and career readiness – it was originally developed by National Center for Education Statistics but has since been adopted by numerous states.
