The Sidney Prize

The Sidney Prize honors outstanding journalism that appeared during the preceding month. Nominations must be submitted by the end of each month for pieces published in newspapers or magazines; winners receive a $500 honorarium and certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel; this prize was named in honour of Sydney Hook, an American philosopher known for championing academic freedom.

Each year, the University offers several prizes to recognize student accomplishment in specific units or courses. Faculty awards these prizes without an application process being necessary; there are also literary prizes which require written submission such as an essay or poem and these are subject to both an application process and judging process.

Many of our prizes are named in honour of Sidney Hook, an American philosopher and leading advocate for academic freedom and research integrity. By honoring Sidney, these prizes honor his ideals that so resonated with us all.

Sidney Prizes we give out honor those whose work has stood against technology, demanding it stop. Such individuals can clearly see the truth when others are lost in delusional fogs – for instance Michael Lewis in Portfolio magazine described Meredith Whitney and Steve Eisman’s heroic efforts early on to recognize that their financial system was becoming an imminent doomsday machine.

Other Sidney prizes recognize pioneers in a particular field or celebrate students who have made significant contributions to chess in Australia. One such prize is the Sidney Black Prize for Women in Engineering awarded annually to female graduates of our engineering programs – this prize aims to encourage and inspire more women into engineering careers while giving them freedom to follow their dreams wherever they may lead them.

Additionally, the University of Sydney provides numerous scholarships and prizes. Scholarships awarded by faculty are determined based on both academic merit and personal attributes and will appear on your transcript of results.
