Privacy Commissioner Ada Chung Lai-ling recently expressed her alarm over an alarming rise in hacking incidents and data leak reports during a radio program, emphasizing how essential it was for organizations to adhere to data regulations by taking all appropriate measures to secure personal data in accordance with law – specifically the Personal Data Protection and Electronic Document Act (PDPO) requires users to safeguard personal information against unauthorised access, processing, erasure, loss or use – even when their data is processed outside Hong Kong.
She noted that the SAR Government was working diligently to promote cross-boundary data flows, explore digital infrastructure and hasten local digital transformation, while cultivating homegrown professionals skilled in big data analysis operations and regulatory supervision. She further encouraged Hong Kong to participate actively in global discussions around data ethics as a means of amplifying its voice and influence in global data governance.
On Thursday, GBAITA and iBDG officially unveiled an international data industry alliance to further establish Hong Kong as a world-class hub for data flows by activating value in data elements while showing leadership in global data ethics. Political heavyweights, officials from Mainland and Hong Kong and industry experts were present for the launch ceremony of this data industry alliance.
Allen Yeung Tak-bun, President and iBDG Founding Chairman for GBAITA/iBDG said Hong Kong must leverage its advantages in order to foster global data space development. In doing so, it is vital that local talents be developed, resources shared across platforms and research results quickly translated.
He stated that the alliance will focus on data governance and privacy protection, drawing in global leading companies and technology pioneers as members, creating a world-class big data infrastructure and exploring innovative data applications to drive high tech enterprises and industry innovation in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Areas.
