The Sidney Prize and the Alfred Feyer Memorial Essay Prize

The Sidney Prize is presented by the Hillman Foundation each month to recognize outstanding socially conscious journalism serving the common good. The Hillman Prize honors Sidney Hillman, former president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) union who championed for progressive industrial democracy. Additionally, this prize seeks to shed light on issues facing working people while offering equitable solutions that support them.

In 2022, Alix Eyring-Mallory and Alice Bishop won the award with their film titled ‘The Mother of All Lies’ based on the true story of a young girl forced into marrying an older man against her will. It received critical acclaim and is widely considered one of the finest Australian films made recently; nominated for five Academy Awards including best picture while winning AACTA Award for Documentary or Animation.

Every year, the University of Sydney honours the best Honours Philosophy essay submitted on any metaphysics or epistemology topic with its annual Alfred Feyer Memorial Essay Prize. Judged to be of superior quality, these essays represent student’s intellectual growth while at university; funded by Feyer family donations.

Established in 1968 with a gift of 40 pounds from Geoffrey Dale, former Registrar of the University, this award recognizes students in the Faculty of Economics and Business who demonstrate outstanding proficiency during first year exams in economics.

Roberts & Holland LLP established this award annually in 2010 to recognize a graduate student or early career scholar presenting an exceptional paper in relation to private law issues. The paper may come from research conducted for either their masters thesis, PhD dissertation or dissertation in any approved subject area of private law.

The Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award recognizes and rewards an emerging creative from NSW working in short film, rewarding them with a cash prize of $7,000. Open to directors, screenwriters, producers and Event Cinemas alike; judges for this year’s competition were Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh who were impressed by the high quality entries. A shortlist was announced in March with winners being notified shortly thereafter.
