The Hongkong Prize – Celebrating the Spirit of Humanity

The Hongkong Prize is one of Asia’s premier awards, drawing thousands of applicants each year. Recognizing scientific research with significant human impact and encouraging young scientists to pursue careers in science, winners receive cash prizes as well as an invitation to conduct their research in Hong Kong. Furthermore, this prize pays tribute to individuals who embody humanity.

Even in the face of an ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Hong Kong held its annual prize ceremony this week, awarding winners in 19 categories via livestream on social media channels from its four major television outlets (TVB, RTHK, CW and Metro Radio). Hosted by a celebrity with a longstanding tradition in supporting local music and talent. High school students nominated by their teachers were given special privileges at participating in this contest.

This scholarship program recognizes high school students for their academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, talents and passions while inspiring them to follow them and develop global perspectives. Open to all secondary students enrolled in Hong Kong schools, cash prizes of up to HK$30,000 plus additional perks may be awarded; applicants should collaborate with their teachers to increase their chances of winning.

The competition is open to Mainland Chinese, Southeast Asian, and international residents who are passionate about writing about Asia and its unique cultures. The top ten finalists receive both a monetary award as well as F&B vouchers and shopping perks; before applying their work should carefully read all rules and regulations to avoid disqualification.

This year’s finalists range from young people using technology to assist homeless individuals to an artist reinterpreting human rights concepts into fine art concepts. Their charitable deeds demonstrate how human spirit can flourish even under difficult conditions. The Hong Kong Prize provides an exceptional platform to recognize and promote those individuals devoted to improving the lives of others in society. Since 2006, over 90 individuals have been honored for their outstanding humanitarian contributions in areas of “Protecting human life”, “Caring for vulnerable health”, and “Respecting human dignity”. The award is generously sponsored by various private enterprises. Hong Kong’s trophies feature designs featuring two precious elements: a pearl and pierced jade amulet. This design has positive connotations across Chinese and Western cultures and also represents Hong Kong as an intricate melting pot of cultures. Apart from receiving a monetary prize, all finalists will attend an awards ceremony where they can showcase their research and achievements to the public. Furthermore, this unique opportunity presents itself in Hong Kong’s premier research facilities; one they should cherish forever.
